Large-scale Fire Tests in So Uk Residential Building - Invitation for participation from members of IFE (HK Branch)

Introduction

So Uk Estate (Chinese: Ĭ«Î邨) in Kowloon is under planning to be demolished by the Hong Kong Housing Authority. Led by the Polytechnics University of Hong Kong, a series of fire tests are proposed to be conducted within the buildings before they are demolished. Real compartment fires will be set up (as opposed to standard fire) and the purposes are to verify/study the followings:

i) Effects of water quenching on reinforced concrete (normal and high strengths) under fire
ii) Effects of spalling of concrete (normal and high strengths) under fire
iii) Effects of architectural/passive protective coatings on enhancing fire resistance of concrete structures
iv) Performance of generic FRP rated elements (fire door, partition)
v) Performance of fiber-reinforced-polymer retrofitted reinforced concrete elements under fire
vi) Fire and smoke spread models
vii) Effects of active fire controls
viii) Chimney/corridor heating effects during fire fighting

Members of the Institute of Fire Engineers are invited to take part and represent IFireE in this investigation program. The candidate is also expected to provide input/comments to the testing team where necessary.

Criteria for Candidate

This is a valuable opportunity to be involved in real fire testing. Since limited number of place is available, members with the following knowledge/experience will have advantage in being selected:

1) Possess real fire fighting experience (8 years minimum), in particular dealing with large fire. As the testing team will be looking for advice in water quenching, knowledge and practical experience will be very valuable.
2) Possess knowledge in fire engineering, preferably a degree in fire engineering.
3) Demonstrate interest in research and keen to take part in fire testing.

Involvement

The following involvement is anticipated from the candidate taking part in the fire testing:
• Attend meetings with the design team (estimated 2 per month during design stage of the fire test) and provide advice where appropriate
• Review the test proposal, set up etc and provide comments if appropriate.
• Conduct site visit when the tests are being set up.
• Attend fire testing.
• Report back to the Institute on the progress and outcome from the fire tests. (once a month)

Tentative Test Program

1 November 2009 to 31 January 2010: Design and finalize test details
1 February 2010 to 31 March 2010: Construction of test elements on site
1 April 2010 to 31 May 2010: Fire tests

Application
