Membership Explanation

1. MEMBERSHIP

Fire Engineers may, originally, have qualified in some other branch of science or engineering or, perhaps, in an apparently unrelated subject such as law. Four years professional practice related to fire engineering, assessed by the Membership Committee, may allow entry to the Associate grade of membership. Alternatively, Fire Engineers may qualify at three different levels through the annual examinations of the Institution or through suitably validated courses and, if desired, proceed to a degree in Fire Engineering by following a university degree course. Two of those degrees have already been accredited as fulfilling the academic requirements for Chartered Engineering status. The chart below illustrates the various routes to membership.

2. ENGINEERING COUNCIL REGISTRATIONS

The Engineering Council or EngC has implemented the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence or UK-SPEC since 1 March 2004. Further to the EngC granting the Institution Nominated Body Status, applicants satisfying the competence standards set by EngC and laid down in UK-SPEC now have the option to apply for registration to EngC and to join the IFE Registrants Group or IFERG to become registered Chartered Engineers, Incorporated Engineers or Engineering Technicians. Interim registration is also possible for applicants who have met the educational standards for registration but have not yet gained the experience to satisfy the professional competences for full registration. For more details, please click here. In September 2013, Reciprocal Recognition Agreement or RRA which has been signed between the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers or HKIE and the Institution of Fire Engineers or IFE allows Members of Fire Discipline in the HKIE and Chartered Engineers of IFERG in the IFE to apply for each other’s membership through RRA route.
